1. Scale and gauge: Model railways are manufactured in different scales, such as H0 (1:87), N (1:160), Z (1:220) etc. The scale determines the size of the models in comparison to the real railway. The track gauge (distance between the rails) varies depending on the scale.
2. Track systems: There are different types of track systems, including straight lines, curves, switches, crossings and signals. These are used to create realistic track layouts.
3. Rolling stock: Model railways include locomotives, carriages, passenger and freight wagons. These models are designed in detail and can be equipped with different types of drive (e.g. steam, diesel, electric).
4. Control: Model trains can be controlled analogue or digitally. With analogue control, the speed and direction of the trains is controlled via controllers.
Digital control enables more precise control and offers functions such as individual train control and sound effects.
